Then, off to Mackinac Island, but not before you download the Mackinac Island App, of course—your guide through the past and into the present of this intriguing island!
Mackinaw City or Mackinac City?
Okay, so by this point, you might be a tad confused. It’s Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City? Or Mackinaw Island and Mackinac City? Both? None? Which one?
We get why things are unclear. Fact is, it’s Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, but they’re both pronounced with an “aw” at the end. So, if you don’t want the locals to give you the side-eye, make sure you always say “Ma-ki-naw” no matter if you’re referring to the island or the city.
Both the names have a long heritage, mixing Native American roots with French and British influences. As language evolved, so did the name of Mackinaw City, becoming a condensed version of the original “Michilimackinac”.
A bit of history or a bite of fudge?
Mackinaw City is flavored with history and with the sugary taste of decadent fudge. Enjoying them separately is great, but putting them together is pure genius. So, grab your favorite fudge flavor and start exploring the various historical landmarks across the city.
Start with Colonial Michilimackinac, a 1960 reconstruction of the excavated Fort Michilimackinac. This is the best place to get up close and personal with Mackinaw City’s past and with the history of the straits. At Colonial Michilimackinac, the year is always 1775 and costumed interpreters play their parts with such conviction that goosebumps are a guaranteed part of the experience. You’ll learn everything about Fort Michilimackinac’s trading role and military endeavors, as well as its importance in the history of Mackinaw City.
Another great place to indulge in the past is Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. A guide since 1889 for ships sailing along the treacherous straits, the lighthouse has been attentively reconstructed to resemble its original architecture as closely as possible. Today, it hosts interesting parts of the area’s history and displays them in various exhibitions. What’s more, it also draws guests into the present moment and elicits oohs and ahs with the views from its top tower.
A walk to the beach or an adventure in the woods?
Do the first and then head for the second. Mackinaw City knows better than to make you pick. With breathtaking scenic views that can’t be missed, it gives both water and climbing lovers exactly what they want.
Before getting to the beach, make a mandatory stop at McGulpin Point. Located at a comfortable distance from the tourist center, the quiet lighthouse aided navigation from 1869 to 1906. After you climb the spiral staircase to its top and take in the views, embark on the Chi Sin Trail. In just three beautiful miles, you’ll arrive at the beach where the cool breeze of freedom will greet you.
If this short hike gets you energized, head to the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park next. Explore its natural beauty by foot, zip through the canopy and climb its five-story Treetop Discovery Tower. Known as one of the oldest industrial sites in the Upper Great Lakes, the park also hosts several demonstrations with costumed interpreters throughout the day. Again, Mackinaw City doesn’t disappoint.
Window shopping or star gazing?
Okay, these two might have nothing in common except the fact that you can do both in Mackinaw City.
For window shopping, head downtown and proceed without hesitation to the main street. Which one is the main street? You’ll recognize it immediately as it is lined with stores, fudge shops, popcorn venues and souvenir shops. Enjoy them all, but make sure not to lose track of time.
For stargazing, make your way to The Headlands, a park established in the late 1950s that will knock you off your feet with 550 acres of pristine woodlands, shorelines and countless species of wildlife. What makes The Headlands even more special is that it was named, in 2011, one of the first ten International Dark Sky Parks in the world. The park remains forever dark, protected from light pollution, and is a haven for stargazers, astronomers, photographers and dark-sky lovers. And yes, Mackinaw City can be proud of this too!
Best time to explore Mackinaw City?
Just like its neighbor, Mackinaw City’s visiting season is from May to late-September. However, this small village of just 800 people warmly welcomes visitors at any time of year.
We know that with so many diverse things to do, you’d expect a larger population. Luckily, Mackinaw City is eventful, yet intimate.
